Hello everyone,

We would like to thank you all very much for your very significant and gracious contributions to BETWEEN THE LINES. Without each of you the film and book would have never happened. We are happy to announce the Limited Engagement Veterans Benefit Screening of BETWEEN THE LINES on Thursday JUNE 26, 2008. Other shows are being planned throughout the summer.

Each of you will receive a complimentary VIP ticket to this show as well as the other shows if you like. This event includes a reception catered by our friends at Jakes Del Mar, a first class restaurant, as well as preferred seating.

This event will benefit the

Rick Thomas Veterans Counseling Center in San Diego. With this in mind we are requesting that your guest purchase a ticket for the event. Rather than purchasing tickets at Hansens, you and one guest will be on a guest list at the door. Your guest can pick up and pay for their tickets the night of the show. The seating is limited, especially the VIP reception. We are asking you to limit your request to yourself and one guest on the list. Please purchase additional tickets at Hansen’s as described below. Thank you for this consideration.

Please reply to (Ty at) this email address with request for yourself, along with the first and last name of your guest. Please indicate if they will be joining you on the VIP list or just general admission. It is important that you reply as soon as you receive this email. Tickets will go on sale for the general public this Friday, May 9th and it’s very possible that tickets won’t last long.

Details are below; VIP tickets are $35 and General Admission is $10. I will be surprised if any tickets are available the night of the show.

Very soon you will also see an advance letter and invitation. Disregard that email. This is an advance notice to the folks who are on our newsletter from the website. They are receiving advance notification that tickets go on sale Friday. (You are on the same mailing list).

Check the website at http://betweenthelinesfilm.com/ for updates. We also have a My Space site at http://www.myspace.com/btlfilm Thanks for all of your support throughout this project. We are really looking forward to seeing you all!

WE HAVE A PRESS RELEASE:

4th Annual Kids for Clean Water Menehune Surf Festival

May 6, 2008

On Sunday May 3rd the Coronado Surfing Association hosted the 4th Annual Kids for Clean Water Menehune Surf Festival. With the support WiLDCOAST, Emerald City Boarding Source, and the City of Coronado, the annual event was once again held at the Coronado Shores.

The Clean Water event was created for Menehunes, with divisions (both long and short board) for boys and girls ranging in age from 5 to 17. Conditions for the contest were fair, as the 3-4 foot waves were clean early on. As the day progressed, the south wind rolled in, thus making the conditions a bit tricky for some of the older Menehune divisions. The surfable set waves rolled into a shorebreak reform for the littlest chargers.

With the south wind picking up, the finals got underway and saw some standout performances even with the less than perfect conditions. Clifford Nies took home first place in the boys 14-17 longboard division and second in the short board division, as Tyler Smith walked away on top of the boys 14-17 shortboard division. Sven Karlsson, Israel Dedina, and Jack Aldredge all took home multiple hardware in the boys 11-13 long and short board divisions. Aldredge won the shortboard division, while Karlsson took the longboard bragging rights. Daniel Dedina was the boys under 10 winner for the second year in a row, as was Malia Faramarzi in the under 10 girls division. Rounding out the top honors was Michaela Branscomb who won the girls 11-13 combined event.

Veterans Benefit Screenings
Between The Lines-Limited Engagement

May 7th, 2008

Hello Friends,

We are wrapping up production on BETWEEN THE LINES and the film should be completed by June 1st.

It is our pleasure to announce that JOHN MILIUS is narrating BETWEEN THE LINES. Mr. Milius is an award winning feature film director and writer. Among his many projects, Mr. Milius co-wrote “Apocalypse Now” as well as directed and co-wrote “Big Wednesday”. It’s an honor having Mr. Milius participate in our film.

We have scheduled two, limited engagement screenings this summer, benefiting local veteran’s charities.

A San Diego area benefit screening will be held at Hansen Surfboards in Encinitas, California on the evening of Thursday, June 26 at 8 PM. This event will benefit the Rick Thomas Veterans Counseling Center in San Diego. The Orange County benefit screening will be on the evening of Friday, July 25 at 8 PM, at the Huntington Beach Art Center. This event will benefit the Long Beach Veterans Hospital Prosthetics and Orthotics Lab.

As soon as tickets go on sale we will give you all advance notification and all the details in this newsletter. Seating is very limited so we recommend purchasing tickets in advance.

The possibility of other veteran’s charity benefit screenings (including the Los Angeles area) is very likely.

Thanks for all of your support and we’ll be in touch soon.

Recent Shark Attack
The Affect On Our Local Community

May 7th, 2008

Since the tragic white shark attack that happened last week at Fletchers Cove in
Solana Beach I have had a lot of people asking me about the affect it has had in the area and so I thought I would post my opinion on the terrible event that happened a little over a week ago.

First and foremost it is a major tragedy and I hope we don’t have something like happen again any time soon as a family has lost a loved one and someone has lost a dad.

I think the events that happened at Fletchers Cove, which ironically is only a block from my house was a freak occurrence that almost never happens. My father Don Hansen can only remember one other shark attack in San Diego North County in the past fifty years where someone has lost there life. I believe there have been a couple of reports where people have possibly been bitten by a shark, but I am not sure on any of these other reports. You also need to think about how many thousands of swimmers and surfers enter the water everyday. After thinking about this plus the idea that 80% of the people entering the water don’t go past about 50 yards off shore you can start to realize that a shark attack in theSan Diego area is very unlikely, but with this all in mind I sometimes am amazed that there are not more encounters with sharks considering all the people that do recreate in the San Diego North County waters.

From what I can see this attack kept most surfers out of the water for less than a day or two, but for the average beach enthusiast it has put a bit of uncertainty into their mind. So far it has seemed to have not affected people from going into the water, but rather made everyone including the surfers aware that there are sharks out there in the ocean and that when you enter the water you are always taking a chance, be it a very small chance, but still a chance. Well let’s keep our fingers crossed that another attack does not occur any time soon and that we have clean, safe, fun, and enjoyable summer beaches for many years to come.

Congrats Austin Ware - Local Encinitas Surfer And
Hansen Team Rider Finishes Second At QS Event

April 23rd, 2008

Austin Ware moves even closer to his life long goal of qualifying for the WCT surfing tour. He finished second at the latest 6 star event in Durban and has now set himself up to potentially make the WCT. Hansen Surfboards would like to give a shout out to Austin and wish him the best of luck in the upcoming events. Below is the press Release of the ASP Tour web site

Weare Beats Ware to Win Quiksilver Pro Durban in Great SurfBLUFF, Durban (Sunday, April 20, 2008) – An inspired performance from Durban’s Davey Weare saw him surf to victory against USA’s Austin Ware in excellent surf at Ansteys on the Bluff near Durban. Utilising their Prime-status alternative venue, the contest organisers had little hesitation in choosing Ansteys for the final day of surfing at the Quiksilver Pro Durban. “Ansteys was always on the radar,” said contest director Matt Wilson of the venue choice for the day. “There’s not much happening at New Pier, or anywhere else on the coast, and we’re seeing some great waves here. The surfers are happy, so it was the right decision to make.” A day of great surfing, big moves and barrel rides ensued, with some explosive match-ups the order of the day.

Josh Kerr from Australia was in the first heat of the day against fellow Australian Shaun Cansdell, and won it convincingly with big turns and some trade-mark airs. “This is a great wave and stoked we moved here,” said Kerr of the new location. “These waves have plenty of push and there’s opportunities for big scores, so it definitely was a good idea to move the event. I got lucky in that heat by catching the good ones, but a win’s a win, so I’ll take it.”

The last local surfer Davey Weare surfed a red-hot heat against German surfer Marlon Lipke, with the Durban surfer sneaking into some tight barrels and off-the top combinations to keep the local hopes alive. One wave in particular looked like a perfect barrel but Davey was clipped while exiting the tube. Still, he had done enough to win the heat. “My first wave was a great one, with a little barrel and a nice hook,” said Davey. “I though that I was going to make that second barrel, and if I had it would have taken some of the pressure off the heat, but it still worked out alright for me.”
