Warm Up Then Head Out!

Warm Up Then Head Out!

I hit the slopes today at Whistler after not having skied for a couple of years. I was stoked that it was as if I hadn’t missed a year of skiing thanks to the warm up I got at Adventure Ski & Snowboard School just outside of Hansen Surfboards

Adventure ski school

Owner Kent Bry invited me to try out their rolling carpet and take a ski lesson to get ready for my trip. He said that any of my bad habits would be exaggerated on the carpet and his staff could point them out and help me fix them. I gave it a shot and was blown away. Although I’ve been skiing since I was five, the 30-minute lesson left me exhausted, as if I had been on the slopes for an entire day! I learned that I needed to edge more, but otherwise I was ready to go. It was a blast of a leg workout too. I heard a teenage snowboarder talk about what a great core workout he was getting. I decided after my trip, I’d go back just for the workout and fun.

So did it make a difference? Definitely!

Usually on the first day of a ski trip, it takes me a half-day to warm up and get my rhythm, I stay off the moguls, and keep it slow and easy until I’m warmed up. Not this trip. I felt warmed up right away, went as smooth and fast as I usually do by the second day of the trip, and I even hit some  moguls with complete confidence.  I also felt like a better skier, thanks to the instruction I got by Kent and his crew.

Thanks Kent!

Snow's Great, No Crowds - Tom Jordan Explains

Saturday, February 04, 2012

Snow’s Great, No Crowds, Hit the Slopes!

It might be perfect beach weather along the coast, but up at local ski resorts, the snow’s great. See for yourself as told by my friend, Tom Jordan, who checked out Snow Summit this past Thursday with his son, Jordan Zimbelman, and brother, Ted Zimbelman.

The cool thing about the timing in all this is that I had been talking to Tom about Hansen Surfboardsannual clearance sale because I was in the middle of working on a news release about selected ski and snowboard gear for up to 50 percent off. Check out the deals while they last. Now through Sunday, February 5!

Hansen Surfboards Shifts into High Gear for Ski & Snowboard Season with Annual Year-End Clearance Sale

ENCINITAS, Calif., Jan. 29, 2012 – Hansen Surfboards is shifting into high gear for ski and snowboard season with its annual year-end clearance sale. Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 through Sunday, Feb. 5, selected skis, snowboards, boots, bindings, adult and children’s clothing, helmets, goggles and accessories will be marked down 20 to 50 percent.

“This is the perfect time to gear up for the season because the deals we’re offering are end of the season prices and we still have a couple of months of good snow left,” said Josh Hansen. “Customers have plenty of time to try out their new gear.”

Hansen Surfboards is the only retailer in North County San Diego offering rentals and full service repair on site.

“There’s still a couple of months left in the ski and snowboard season, so there’s still a big selection left of clothing and accessories and great deals,” added Hansen. “It’s not like in years past when we had sales at the end of the season and selections were limited. This sale is a big one.”

Founded in 1961, Hansen Surfboards is San Diego’s largest surf shop and credits the San Diego community, surf legends and brands that have been a big part of its success. With more than 16,000 square feet of retail space, it offers something for everyone in the family. Hansen Surfboards has been celebrating 50 years of success as a single-store, family-owned and operated retail business. The California Surf Museum is currently displaying “Hansen Surfboards – A 50 Year Retrospective” showcasing Don Hansen and Hansen Surfboards and their contributions to the surfing community through the end of February 2012. Let it rain… let it SNOW!!!

Monday, December 12, 2011

Let it rain… let it SNOW!!!

Am I some sort of sicko because the cold, pouring rain at daybreak totally makes my day? I’ve always had a thing for weather like this, and I suspect it started back when I was five and put on my first pair of snow skis. I learned fast that bad weather meant great snow conditions and that awesome, fly-through-the-powder feeling the next day!

Local Mountains get Snow

And that’s what we have now… so call in sick and grab your sticks or your board and head for the mountains!
