Costa Mesa, USA (February 13, 2012) – Rip Curl International announced today that the surfing brand has happily re-signed Hawaiian professional surfer and long-time team rider Bethany Hamilton. Per company policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hamilton, who courageously returned to surfing after surviving the loss of her left arm in a 14-foot tiger shark attack while surfing off Kaua'i's North Shore in 2003, is the world's most recognized surfing figure, remaining a source of inspiration to millions of people around the world through her story of survival, faith, determination and hope.

The 22-year old returned to the water a mere month after the attack and has continued to compete in amateur and, more recently, professional surfing contests in the eight years since. Her biggest results include winning the NSSA National Title in 2005 and a second-place finish at the ASP World Junior Championships in 2008.

Out of the water Bethany has shared her story with hundreds of media outlets and has been recognized with numerous awards, public appearances, and a variety of speaking engagements. In October 2004, Bethany released her autobiography entitled Soul Surfer, which was last year made into a major motion picture bearing the same title - starring Anna Sophia Robb, Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, Carrie Underwood and Lorraine Nicholson, as Bethany's long-time friend and fellow Rip Curl surfer Alana Blanchard.

"2011 was an incredible year for my family and I with the opportunity to share our story through Soul Surfer," said Hamilton. "It was exciting, adventurous, challenging and left us with a great feeling of accomplishment. It's been amazing to see how great of an impact the movie and my foundation 'Friends of Bethany Hamilton' has had on so many peoples lives."

Hamilton will spend a lot of time in the water in 2012, setting her focus on competing on the ASP Women's World Tour and progressing her big wave surfing.

"My surfing goals are to bring my full focus back to competing and finding the time to pursue bigger waves and tow surfing. I'm really looking forward to some surf-focused travel with the emphasis on barrels, fun and living the search."

"Outside of surfing, I'm keen to work on a travel TV show and obviously want to continue inspiring people to overcome adversity and live a healthy lifestyle."

Hamilton originally signed with Rip Curl in 1999 at age 9 after being scouted at a local Hawaiian junior surfing event.

There is a common perception that “green” products tend to have reduced performance and increased cost. For example, a Prius hybrid car costs a few thousand dollars extra and drives rather slowly and sedately. This perception of uncomfortable tradeoffs is hard to shake. Going “eco” means you are giving up “fun”.

However, surfboards made from the latest eco-friendly materials are changing all of that.  Boards made from recycled EPS blanks are actually stronger than boards made from “virgin” EPS, and new bio-based epoxy resins are just as durable, clear, and easy to use as the petrochemical resins.  Other options such as bamboo stringers and fins made from recycled carpet fibers also increase strength and performance.

All of this sounds great in theory, but the proof comes from pro surfers and shapers. Timmy Patterson has recently made a number of boards from Marko 100% recycled EPS. He says that the foam is noticeably stronger than the equivalent virgin EPS blank. It’s a little harder to shape, but nothing significant for a good shaper with sharp tools. 

Pro surfer, Mike Losness has one of these boards and loves it. It performs so well that it’s the only board he has ridden in the past four months. The board has held up well through some hard surfing. In fact, there are very few stories of the recycled EPS boards actually breaking.

There is no longer any good reason not to order a board made from these eco-friendly materials. It has increased performance while also having up to a 50% reduction in environmental footprint. The cost is the same as any other EPS/epoxy surfboard. That’s a win-win-win scenario. Especially considering that “traditional” surfboard production is highly toxic for both people and the planet. The future is now here.

If you’re in a time crunch on your Christmas shopping, here’s a holiday shopping story that’ll make you feel better and let you know there’s a way to get it all done in a couple of hours or less!

Last night, I finally had a moment to set out and tackle my Christmas list. I was feeling pretty guilty about it too, because after all, it was December 21 and I hadn’t bought a single gift for anyone. Between family and work demands, time just slipped away and there it was… four days before Christmas.

I headed to Hansen Surfboards and got my entire list taken care of – with the exception of two items – in less than a couple of hours. The sales staff was incredibly helpful. What’s convenient is that I could not only get my brother’s surf gloves there, but I could also take care of the non-surfer, skier or snow-boarder in my life with gifts like scented candles, frames and other decorative items, great fashions for men, women and kids, that made it hard to keep myself from buying everything I saw.

And get this: after Christian Hansen rang me up at the register, he asked me if I wanted everything gift wrapped while I waited, at no charge!

I got home a few hours later, put perfectly wrapped packages under the tree and thought about what a relaxing experience that was.

Now you can forget about long, boring road trips for epic snow.  Flights to Mammoth leave at 7:40 a.m. daily by United Express (operated by SkyWest Airlines) and arrive at Mammoth at 9 a.m.

For those not familiar with Mammoth Mountain ski resort, it’s a quick, 15-minute drive from the Mammoth Lakes-Yosemite airport.  The return flight leaves Mammoth at 3:41 p.m. and arrives at Lindbergh shortly after 5 p.m.

That means you’re getting an almost a full day on the slopes each day you’re coming and going to Mammoth. SWEEEET!

This is huge news for those of us who have braved many long, boring six- to eight-hour junk food and caffeine fueled drives to Mammoth. I have to say six- to eight-hours for PC reasons: because it all depends on your driving habits. I’ve made it in record time and met a lot of California Highway Patrol officers who thought my Texas accent and reasons for speeding were “interesting” enough to get me out of plenty of citations.

In my defense though, eight hours of driving to Mammoth just doesn’t cut it. I’ve always found it so frustrating that such a fantastic ski resort as Mammoth is so close, yet so far way.

The Mammoth Lakes Town Council talked about this for years, well before the real estate boom that led to the development of The Village at Mammoth, and all the mountain improvements. The timeline for direct flights kept moving until everyone stopped believing it would ever happen.

Not anymore. It’s finally a reality, and I’m going online and booking a flight!

Hansen Surfboards Rewards Students

with “Goods for Grades” Program

Almost $94,000 awarded in merchandise for good grades in 2011,

$455,918.27 awarded to students since program’s inception in 1996.

ENCINITAS, Calif., December. 12, 2011 – Hansen Surfboards, celebrating its 50^th anniversary this year, has announced that the company has given away nearly $94,000 in merchandise for good grades in 2011. Since the Goods for Grades program was created in October of 1996 by the Hansen family to reward students from elementary through high school for their good grades, the retailer has given away a total of $445,918. 27.

“In July of this year alone, we redeemed $25,000 worth of merchandise for good grades,” said Josh Hansen. “Kids come from all over to bring us their report cards. We get kids who used to live in San Diego County and save their report cards until their family vacation and annual visit to Hansen Surfboards, and others who hear about this from the Internet and stop by for a visit.”

Since the program was created, it has grown rapidly. To provide a snapshot, here’s how the numbers have jumped since 2007:

Am I some sort of sicko because the cold, pouring rain at daybreak totally makes my day? I’ve always had a thing for weather like this, and I suspect it started back when I was five and put on my first pair of snow skis. The San Diego County forecast is calling for a winter storm warning with snow levels near 4,000 to 4,500 feet, lowering to 3,000 to 3,500 feet late tonight through Tuesday morning for the San Bernadino County Mountains. The greatest potential for locally heavy snowfall is in the San Bernadino Mountains above 6,000 feet with significant accumulation expected in all mountains down to 5,000 feet with a few inches possible down to 4,000 to 4,500 feet.

I’m like a guy when it comes to shopping. That is, if you make me go to a mall or a big box retailer, I shudder. I only go when I need something, and I do it as quickly as possible. In and out, with the minimum time necessary to get what I need. Then I bolt. 

I can’t stand the crowds, messy displays, chaos, and floor help who are impossible to find. If and when I finally get help, they act like they’re being asked to move mountains when all I’m requesting is something in my size. That’s why customer service is a huge deal to me. I’m not a recreational shopper, so why make the experience worse with bad service?

When I heard about Small Business Saturday (November 26), I was all over it. For one day, people are encouraged to shop at small businesses instead of large retailers.

I love that! Give people a cause to support small business!

Small Business Saturday is a whole day when small businesses get all the attention and everyone’s encouraged to forgo big box retailers for small shops.

Until I started doing PR for Hansen Surfboards, I was under the misconception that their gear would be expensive. As I started writing their news releases, comparing prices and truly noticing the difference, I discovered I was wrong about the prices. In fact, I was wrong about everything because I had assumed what everyone else tends to assume when it comes to shopping at small businesses: I thought that because they’re a small business, they’re more expensive than big box retailers. They’re not!

What’s the difference?  It’s huge!

The prices are comparable, but there’s a massive difference when it comes to customer service, especially when you consider many of the Hansen Surfboard employees have been there 30 years or more, including the original Hansen family members who founded the company 50 years ago. They demo the equipment before they recommend it, so they truly know what’s good and what’s not and they’re not about to recommend or carry products they wouldn’t buy for themselves. Gift wrapping is free during the holidays. Customer service is second to none. They personally know their regular customers. And their vendors – big names you find at massive department stores – absolutely love them!

So what can you expect to find at Hansen Surfboards on Small Business Saturday?

An assortment of men’s surf clothing, women’s surf clothing and accessories including beach dresses and handbags, and kids surf clothing backpacks, shoes and other fun stuff, surfboards and surf gear, skis, snowboards and snow gear, an insanely humongous footwear department with more than 6,000 pairs of sandals and more than 68 different styles of UGG Australian Boots, and so much more.

If you’re heading to the snow for a ski or snowboard trip, Hansen Surfboards is one of the only shops in San Diego that has its own tune up department to help you keep your gear in top shape before you hit the slopes. You can also rent demo skis and snowboards to try before you buy.

I can already tell you I’ll be a frequent customer of the demo department between now and February while I figure out which new skis to call my own by Spring.

I have a confession. And it’s almost embarrassing, especially because I’ve lived in Southern California for 23 years. I had never tried on a pair of UGG Australia Boots until last week. There. I said it.

I have a logical excuse. I truly thought the classic UGGs were ugly. Until I went to Hansen Surfboards and stepped into a pair. I really wish I hadn’t done that because it started a chain reaction.

I could blame it on Hansen Surfboards because they have the largest selection of UGG boots in North County San Diego, but I won’t.  Truth is, I wanted to check out the selection because I do PR for Hansen Surfboards and was working on a news release about it. I certainly can’t write about something I haven’t tried. I get really cold in the winter and I love the idea of UGG boots but I’ve never liked the way they look. I’ve always preferred cowboy boots, being the Texas girl that I am.

After all, those were the boots I thought were a fashion faux pas. I tried on a black pair just to make fun of them. And then I got bummed out. Truly bummed because I fell in love. Right there. In front of the mirror, wearing those boots that I had sworn I’d never put on my feet.

I stood there looking at myself for the longest time, wearing those black mush boots and swooning. The clerk kept asking me if I was okay. And I kept raving, telling him I just couldn’t believe I took so long to cave.

Stepping into UGGs is like stepping into a cloud of warm fur that hugs you back. I finally got it. Who cares what they look like when they’re as warm and comfortable as UGGs?  I’m totally sold now and am thrilled to have a source like Hansen’s with so many style choices.  And come to think of it, my toes do get cold in my cowboy boots!

My favorite styles? The UGG Lynnea short boot with lamb fur lining that folds over the leather or suede leather boot that comes in brown or black. Hansen Surfboards Kicks Off Ski & Snowboard Season

with Annual Snow & Swap Sale Nov. 5 & 6

ENCINITAS, Calif., Oct. 31, 2011 – Hansen Surfboards is kicking off the ski and snowboard season with its annual Snow & Swap sale Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 – 6. Up to 50 percent off selected models of skis and snowboards, and clothing and accessories are also being offered during the sale.

“We’ve held the Snow & Swap Sale for years and it’s our way of helping our customers sell their gently used snow gear and swap it out for items they need,” said Josh Hansen. “It’s become a tradition that people just love because it gets them to go through their gear, figure out what they want to sell and what they need, and get pumped for the ski and snowboard season.”

From now until Friday, Nov. 4, customers can bring their used ski and snowboard equipment and clothing, excluding accessory items such as gloves, goggles and hats, to Hansen Surfboards to register it for the Snow & Swap sale. An item registration fee and 20 percent of any item sold will be charged to cover advertising costs. Items are evaluated for safety prior to registration.

Hansen Surfboards is also the only retailer in North County San Diego offering full service repair and rentals on site.

“For us, the Snow & Swap Sale marks the end of summer and beginning of winter sports and our store reflects that. We’ve added the latest in snowboard and ski wear, equipment and accessories,” added Hansen. “And always in the mix are surf accessories and equipment. From Oct. 27 through Nov. 10, Hansen Surfboards will give a 15 percent discount to everyone who donates $15 worth of canned or dry food. The discount excludes surfboards, UGG products, gift cards, swap and sale items.

According to the Community Resource Center, one out of every 10 children in North County eats only one meal a day. In preparation for Thanksgiving, Hansen Surfboards is helping North County kids get more than one meal a day.

“We were shocked when we heard the hunger statistics that are taking place in our own backyard. We felt like we needed to do something to help and we know our customers would feel the same way,” said Josh Hansen. “We’re doing this for the kids who aren’t getting enough to eat and the timing just before Thanksgiving couldn’t be more perfect. The impact $15 worth of canned or dried food can make in a child’s life may not seem like a lot to one person, but if we can get the community on board, together we can make a big difference.”

Since Hansen Surfboards is celebrating its 50^th year in business, it makes sense for the company to give back to its community during the Thanksgiving season. Hansen Surfboards has dedicated much of its career to helping those less fortunate. In the past, Hansen’s has actively participated in “One Day Without Shoes”, and is an annual contributor to “Soles4Souls,” both organizations that provide shoes for the millions of children who grow up without shoes and are at risk of infection and disease because of it. This year alone they donated more than 3,500 pounds of shoes.
