SanDiego.com Deems Hansen’s the Best One Stop Shop for Surf Apparel in San Diego

As a San Diego native and avid surfer, I have spent my fair share of time in local surf shops. I’ve perused the racks of countless shops for the perfect fitting wetsuit, new favorite board and durable flip flops for a summer in San Diego since I was a kid. It seems every street corner in Southern California is home to a surf shop looking to stand out among the rest, but there is one that always sticks out in my mind and keeps me coming back – Hansen’s.

Located in San Diego’s popular surf community, Encinitas, Hansen’s is heralded as the largest surf shop in San Diego County. Hansen’s combines the board-sport world by focusing on surf culture and surf gear, but also recognizing the inherent connection between surfers, snowboards and skaters. Packed with everything from Channel Islands short boards to skateboards and even snowboards in the winter, Hansen’s Boardroom is a boarders dream while the main shop houses everything from clothing, shoes and accessories to surf inspired home décor.

As a staple in a community known for great surf spots, an abundance of surf culture and countless shops all competing to be the coolest around, Hansen’s still manages to outshine the rest. Located in north county San Diego since 1962, Hansen’s is guaranteed to bring the surf community of San Diego the best and biggest supply of surf gear and apparel in town.

The employees of Hansen Surfboards have been putting in extra hours—but it’s more than summertime uptick that’s got them busy.

They’ve spent the past several days baking cupcakes, muffins, cookies, cakes and all other things delightful for Saturday bake sale will help raise money to feed hungry children.

Proceeds from the event—which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the store parking lot—will benefitShare Our Strength, a nonprofit working toward eradicating childhood hunger in the US by 2015.

The idea came about when Hansen Surfboards employee Patty Bolton, an avid baker, learned about the effort while watching TV one night.

“I was watching the Cooking Channel when I saw a special about the Share Our Strength and it said that one in five children in America struggle with hunger every day. I decided to take my love of baking and do something good for kids in need,” explained Bolton.

So she approached Josh Hansen, and soon, the whole staff was on board.

When the owners of Channel Islands Surfboards caught wind of the fundraiser, they donated aTaylor Knox autographed surfboard for an opportunity drawing—as did the owners of LOST Surfboards.

Already, Bolton and the Hansen Surfboards staff have raised slightly more than $600 for Share Our Strength, just $900 shy of the goal to raise $1,500.

Mick Fanning Claims Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Over Kelly Slater

April 6, 2012 – Rip Curl's Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, has claimed the 2012 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger over reigning 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 40, in pumping, offshore three-to-five foot waves at Bells Beach.

Mick Fanning

Event No. 2 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach culminated in dramatic fashion today with many calling it the "best Final in event history."

Mick and Kelly went blow for blow throughout the 35-minute bout, exchanging massive scores and the lead several times before the dust settled.

"I'm so pumped," Fanning said. "Kelly (Slater) did that Hail Mary for the 10 and I thought, 'oh, here we go.' I just caught waves and I'm stoked it all paid off. I'm really at a loss for words and I'm just pumped. It doesn't get any sweeter. The crowd's been amazing with the whole amphitheater and the history that comes with it. I always picture this event and have had some seconds over the years, so to get this one, I'm so pumped."

Today's win marked Fanning's 14th elite tour win and his first Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach win since 2001. It also brings the Australian's record with Slater closer to even at 7 to Kelly's 8 in their heat matchup history.

This year's Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach was dedicated to the memory of three-time event winner Michael Peterson (AUS), who tragically passed away last week, and the Final was preceded by a minute's applause in memory of the great Australian.

"I was on the verge of tears out the back," Fanning said. "I just sat out the back before the Final and just took in the whole crowd. It's not everyday you've got the crowd cheering and I could have paddled in after that, but I'm glad I didn't though."

Although finishing an uncharacteristic 13th at his homebreak on the Gold Coast, today's victory rockets Fanning to No. 3 on the ASP World Championship Tour rankings heading into the next event.

"I had a bit of a meltdown at the first event," Fanning said. "I knew everything was working well. I knew I just needed to go and simple things up. I took the headphones off and had a lot more fun. I knew there were going to be a lot of waves with the tide dropping out and I guess I just wanted to be on the good ones. You've got to just believe in your judgment and I'm stoked."

Highlights from the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach will be available via http://live.ripcurl.com

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am and assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start to the Rip Curl Women's Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Fiesta.

Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton Re-Signs with Rip Curl International

Bethany Hamilton

Costa Mesa, USA (February 13, 2012) – Rip Curl International announced today that the surfing brand has happily re-signed Hawaiian professional surfer and long-time team rider Bethany Hamilton. Per company policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hamilton, who courageously returned to surfing after surviving the loss of her left arm in a 14-foot tiger shark attack while surfing off Kaua'i's North Shore in 2003, is the world's most recognized surfing figure, remaining a source of inspiration to millions of people around the world through her story of survival, faith, determination and hope.

The 22-year old returned to the water a mere month after the attack and has continued to compete in amateur and, more recently, professional surfing contests in the eight years since. Her biggest results include winning the NSSA National Title in 2005 and a second-place finish at the ASP World Junior Championships in 2008.

Out of the water Bethany has shared her story with hundreds of media outlets and has been recognized with numerous awards, public appearances, and a variety of speaking engagements. In October 2004, Bethany released her autobiography entitled Soul Surfer, which was last year made into a major motion picture bearing the same title - starring Anna Sophia Robb, Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, Carrie Underwood and Lorraine Nicholson, as Bethany's long-time friend and fellow Rip Curl surfer Alana Blanchard.

"2011 was an incredible year for my family and I with the opportunity to share our story through Soul Surfer," said Hamilton. "It was exciting, adventurous, challenging and left us with a great feeling of accomplishment. It's been amazing to see how great of an impact the movie and my foundation 'Friends of Bethany Hamilton' has had on so many peoples lives."

Hamilton will spend a lot of time in the water in 2012, setting her focus on competing on the ASP Women's World Tour and progressing her big wave surfing.

"My surfing goals are to bring my full focus back to competing and finding the time to pursue bigger waves and tow surfing. I'm really looking forward to some surf-focused travel with the emphasis on barrels, fun and living the search."

"Outside of surfing, I'm keen to work on a travel TV show and obviously want to continue inspiring people to overcome adversity and live a healthy lifestyle."

Hamilton originally signed with Rip Curl in 1999 at age 9 after being scouted at a local Hawaiian junior surfing event.

Other sponsors include Channel Islands, Sticky Bumps, Damon System, Sambazon, and Future Fins.

“Ecoboards” Raising the Level of Surfing Performance

by Kevin Whilden, Co-Founder of Sustainable Surf

waste for waves

There is a common perception that “green” products tend to have reduced performance and increased cost. For example, a Prius hybrid car costs a few thousand dollars extra and drives rather slowly and sedately. This perception of uncomfortable tradeoffs is hard to shake. Going “eco” means you are giving up “fun”.

However, surfboards made from the latest eco-friendly materials are changing all of that.  Boards made from recycled EPS blanks are actually stronger than boards made from “virgin” EPS, and new bio-based epoxy resins are just as durable, clear, and easy to use as the petrochemical resins.  Other options such as bamboo stringers and fins made from recycled carpet fibers also increase strength and performance.

All of this sounds great in theory, but the proof comes from pro surfers and shapers. Timmy Patterson has recently made a number of boards from Marko 100% recycled EPS. He says that the foam is noticeably stronger than the equivalent virgin EPS blank. It’s a little harder to shape, but nothing significant for a good shaper with sharp tools.

Pro surfer, Mike Losness has one of these boards and loves it. It performs so well that it’s the only board he has ridden in the past four months. The board has held up well through some hard surfing. In fact, there are very few stories of the recycled EPS boards actually breaking.

There is no longer any good reason not to order a board made from these eco-friendly materials. It has increased performance while also having up to a 50% reduction in environmental footprint. The cost is the same as any other EPS/epoxy surfboard. That’s a win-win-win scenario. Especially considering that “traditional” surfboard production is highly toxic for both people and the planet. The future is now here.

Even better, you can be part of the solution to create these boards by bringing your waste Styrofoam into Hansens. Then, the Waste to Waves program can recycle it into new EPS surfboard blanks.

Rip Curl

Costa Mesa, CA (February 10, 2012): Rip Curl is both ecstatic and honored to win the 2011 SIMA Image Awards' "Wetsuit of the Year" for the FLASH BOMB, which took place at The Grove Theater in Anaheim, California last night.

In addition to surfing, Machado can often be heard playing his music on various tours and continues to be an activist for clean oceans while giving back to his local community.

Jamie Mitchell

The always-poised Jamie Mitchell added, “I'm honored to be joining the Reef team. Reef has an amazing group of athletes, many of which I have looked up to for a long time.
