Sunglasses and Your Health: 100% UV Protection – What Does That Mean?
(Or 98% UV protection, etc.)? UVA and UVB are terms used to define rays from the sun that are harmful to your eyes if received above your body’s tolerance level. Sunglasses with plastic or glass lens that are colored, but not treated for UV protection, do not offer UV protection.
The term “UV Protection” is itself not accurate without more information, and can be used in deceptive ways in unscrupulous advertising. The widely respected and authoritative Mayo Clinic offers information on UV protection and on the diverse materials commonly used in the manufacture of sunglasses. We particularly recommend a Mayo Clinic article authored by Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist Dennis Robertson, M.D as a great source of more information.
Please note too: All sunglasses from Hansen Surfboards and Hansen’s Surf Shop (see our Sunglasses page) have UVA and UVB protection, the measure of which is contained in each product detail page for the product.
